Configuration must be available to the application without exposing credentials in source control, logs or browser code. What belongs in the runtime and which access controls matter?

Restrict account host patterns and grant only the required database privileges. Use TLS and supported authentication plugins. Store connection secrets outside source code, and verify client compatibility before changing authentication defaults or requiring stronger connection settings.
