Multiplicity Constraint Violation in Association Class Definitions

In UML class diagrams, an Association Class is designed to hold properties that belong to the relationship between two entities rather than the entities themselves. According to the specification, an Association Class represents a unique link between participating instances.
A conflict arises when attempting to define multiplicity constraints on the Association Class itself. While the participating ends of the association can have various multiplicities, the Association Class is logically constrained to a multiplicity of 0..1 or 1 relative to the link it describes.
When implementing complex constraints using Object Constraint Language (OCL) across different CASE tools, the enforcement of this uniqueness constraint varies. This creates uncertainty regarding how the model should behave when a tool allows a multiplicity greater than 1 on the Association Class.
- Does a multiplicity greater than 1 on an Association Class fundamentally invalidate the model's compliance with the OMG specification?
- How should OCL expressions resolve navigation when the uniqueness of the link is not strictly enforced by the modeling tool?
