An upgrade needs a compatibility check, a tested release and a recovery path. Which changes deserve particular attention before the new version reaches production?

Apply supported security updates regularly and test major distribution upgrades separately. Check kernel, driver and application compatibility, and retain a known bootable recovery option. Plan restarts for services and the kernel; installing updated packages does not always replace already-running code.
