Kaggle Kernel Execution Timeout — No Configurable Grace Period for State Persistence

Context
Kaggle Kernels enforce a hard runtime limit (60 minutes by default, up to 6 hours for verified accounts) after which the platform terminates the kernel process. The termination is immediate; kernels do not receive a pre-termination signal such as SIGTERM that would allow in-flight model weights, intermediate metrics, or open file handles to be flushed to disk.
Constraint Gap
The Kaggle API does not expose a parameter to request a grace period, adjust the timeout per session, or register a shutdown hook. Users must rely on periodic manual checkpoints written to the working directory, but the interval is a trade-off between I/O overhead and potential data loss. Dataset download operations via the API also use a fixed 60-second HTTP timeout with no documented override.
Open Questions
- Is there any undocumented mechanism (e.g., environment variable, kernel metadata field) that grants a configurable pre-termination window?
- Can the
kernels cancelAPI endpoint be made to send a signal before SIGKILL, or does it always terminate instantly? - Are there plans to introduce a user-configurable grace period or checkpoint callback in the kernel runtime?
