GLIBC version mismatch in Crystal release binaries
25K reputation · 30 May 2021, 16:10 UTC
A Crystal application compiled with crystal build --release functions as expected in a local development environment but fails to execute when deployed to a production server with a different Linux distribution.
Because Crystal compiles to LLVM IR and links against system libraries, the resulting binary is platform-specific. Discrepancies between the GLIBC versions of the build environment and the production target can lead to runtime failures during binary execution.
Deployment Constraints
- Build environment: Modern Linux distribution with current toolchain.
- Production environment: Stable Linux distribution with an older GLIBC version.
What are the recommended strategies for ensuring binary portability across different Linux distributions in Crystal? Is static linking a viable option for reducing these dependencies?
