Express.js and Database Pool Drivers: Connection Leakage during Client Disconnects

Resource Management at the Integration Boundary
Express.js delegates connection pooling to external database drivers or ORMs. A critical challenge arises when a client terminates a request prematurely, while the server-side asynchronous route handler is still awaiting a database response or processing a transaction.
Because Express 4.x does not provide a native lifecycle hook to signal the cancellation of pending asynchronous operations upon request termination, there is a risk that connections remain active in the driver's pool until a driver-level timeout occurs. This behavior can lead to intermittent pool exhaustion under high load, as the application cannot proactively release handles for abandoned requests.
Integration Constraints
- Express request timeouts may differ from database driver pool timeouts.
- Unhandled promise rejections in async middleware may bypass the
next()callback.
How can a standardized mechanism be implemented to ensure database connections are released immediately when the client closes the connection? Is there a recommended pattern to synchronize the Express request lifecycle with the pool's connection release logic?
