Enforcing Database Credential Isolation in Yii 2 Integration Tests

Environment Configuration and Credential Isolation
Yii 2 supports environment-specific configuration through the YII_ENV constant, which determines which config file is loaded. The framework automatically loads config/dev.php, config/test.php, or config/prod.php based on the current environment setting.
During integration testing, the test environment should use a dedicated database with isolated credentials. However, Yii 2 does not automatically prevent config/test.php from inheriting production database settings if the developer does not explicitly override the 'db' component.
This creates a potential permission boundary risk where integration tests could inadvertently connect to production databases, especially when:
- Config files use environment variable inheritance without proper scoping
- CI/CD pipelines do not validate test database configuration
- Developers forget to define separate test database credentials
The framework relies on developers to implement credential isolation manually, with no built-in mechanism to detect or prevent production database access during testing.
Unresolved Decision
Should Yii 2 provide a built-in safeguard that enforces credential isolation for test environments, such as a test-only DB connector that throws an exception when production credentials are detected, or should this remain a project-level implementation responsibility?
