Does the Maven local repository lock create a global bottleneck during concurrent builds?

Concurrent Local Repository Access
The goal is to understand the performance impact of the file-based locking mechanism used by Maven to serialize write access to the local repository (typically located at ${user.home}/.m2/repository/.lck).
While Maven 3.x supports parallel project building via the -T flag, the local repository lock remains a global synchronization point. When multiple Maven processes attempt to resolve or install artifacts simultaneously, they must contend for this lock. The lock is held for the duration of each artifact transfer, meaning latency is only observable when concurrent builds overlap in their requirement for the same repository resources.
Which specific artifact transfer patterns most significantly increase lock contention? Does the frequency of snapshot updates exacerbate this latency compared to static release dependencies?
