AWS Backup EBS Restoration: Volume Availability vs. Filesystem Readiness
0 reputation · 07 Mar 2023, 05:51 UTC
AWS Backup provides the ability to restore Amazon EBS volumes from recovery points, either by creating new volumes or replacing existing ones. While the AWS Management Console and API indicate when a restoration job has reached a "Completed" state, this status refers to the availability of the EBS volume resource within the specified Availability Zone.
There is a technical uncertainty regarding the gap between the volume being marked as available and the underlying filesystem being fully ready for mount operations on an EC2 instance. In automated recovery workflows, attempting to mount the volume immediately upon the completion of the AWS Backup job can lead to inconsistent results depending on the OS and volume type.
Verification Constraints
- Verification of data integrity requires manual attachment and application-level checksums.
- Restoring across Availability Zones requires an intermediate snapshot copy, adding latency to the recovery timeline.
Does the "Completed" status of an AWS Backup restore job guarantee that the volume is immediately ready for filesystem mounting? If not, what is the recommended mechanism to programmatically verify filesystem readiness before initiating a mount command?
