Alert handler limits in Karate DSL 1.x

Suppressing noisy alerts while preserving logs
In Karate, the alertHandler function is the documented way to control JavaScript alert(), confirm(), and prompt() dialogs during UI test runs. By default, an unexpected alert causes an AssertionError and prints the dialog text to the console, producing noisy output. The handler receives the dialog message and must return a boolean: true to accept/OK, false to dismiss/Cancel. Logging the message inside the handler (e.g., karate.log('Alert: ' + msg)) replaces the console pop‑up noise with a clean test‑log entry.
Current constraints
- The handler is set globally via
karate.configure('alertHandler', fn)and applies to the entire runtime. - Scenario‑specific overrides are not supported, so a global handler may mask legitimate alerts in some tests.
- Returning an incorrect boolean can inadvertently accept
confirm()orprompt()dialogs that require user input, leading to false positives.
Unresolved questions
- Is there a way to define a scenario‑specific
alertHandlerthat temporarily overrides the global configuration? - Can we configure the handler to log alert messages without automatically accepting or dismissing them, thereby preserving test failure behavior?
- What is the impact on test results when the handler returns
falsefor aconfirm()orprompt()dialog—does the scenario fail or continue?
