Word can display menus in one language while checking a document in another. Text copied from a template or another document can retain its own proofing properties. That makes a document-level investigation more useful than repeatedly reinstalling Office when spelling or grammar appears to work inconsistently.
Keep a copy of the affected document. Create a new blank document and type a short sentence with deliberate spelling mistakes in the intended language. Compare the new document with the existing one. If the small test works, the difference points toward document content or settings, though it is not complete proof of the cause.
Record your Word edition and platform. Desktop Word, Word for the web and different subscriptions do not expose exactly the same Editor features. Spelling, grammar and writing refinements are separate capabilities, and availability varies by language and product.
Select the relevant text and inspect its proofing-language setting. On supported desktop versions, this is available through the Review language controls. Check whether the text is marked to skip spelling and grammar, and whether automatic language detection is producing the intended result.
For a document containing several languages, do not blindly assign one language to all content. Test one affected paragraph first. A language chosen for Office’s interface does not necessarily replace language metadata already attached to document text. Confirm that the required proofing support is installed or available for the product you use.
Check the applicable proofing options and run Editor or the spelling check explicitly. If your organization’s policy permits it, compare a non-sensitive test document in Word for the web. A difference between web and desktop can help narrow the investigation, but do not upload confidential documents merely to perform the test.
Some connected Editor features depend on account, connectivity and privacy settings. Review those conditions without assuming every language has identical grammar support. If the same short test fails in a newly created document, collect the product version, language and exact missing feature before pursuing repair or support.
Record the setting that changed the result. A useful answer explains which text was affected and which capability returned; “reinstall Office” alone does not tell the next reader whether the cause was language metadata or the application installation.
