Problem: consistent accessible UI without a component wrapper layer
A Vue 3 web app needs consistent accessible UI, predictable theming, and SSR-safe rendering without authoring a large set of custom components or wrapper abstractions. Vuetify 3 provides pre-built Material Design components with built-in ARIA roles and keyboard navigation. The engineering decision is to use Vuetify directly at app root and keep it as a presentation layer only.
Requirements that drive the choice
Consistent accessible UI. Vuetify components ship with ARIA attributes and focus management. Using them reduces custom component authoring and the accessibility testing surface.
SSR-safe rendering. Server rendered markup must match client hydration to avoid warnings and re-renders. Vuetify 3 is designed for Vue 3 SSR but requires a single plugin install and stable theme config on both server and client.
Minimal wrapper code. Wrappers add maintenance cost. The requirement is to use components directly in views unless a cross-cutting concern such as logging, permission gating, or data fetching requires an abstraction.
Smallest suitable design
Install the Vuetify plugin once at app root, provide a default theme and locale, and import component styles globally. Do not install per route or per micro-frontend.
// main.ts, run with app build permissions
import { createApp } from 'vue'
import { createVuetify } from 'vuetify'
import 'vuetify/styles'
import App from './App.vue'
const vuetify = createVuetify({
theme: {
defaultTheme: 'light',
themes: {
light: { colors: { primary: '#1976D2' } }
}
},
locale: { locale: 'en' }
})
createApp(App).use(vuetify).mount('#app')
Version assumption: Vuetify 3 with Vue 3. API names and plugin installation differ from Vuetify 2. Validate against the version in use.
Use components directly in views, e.g., VBtn, VCard, VDataTable. Add a thin app-level composable only if you need to expose theme switching or locale switching to multiple views. Avoid per-component wrappers that duplicate props.
Trust and data boundaries
Vuetify is client UI only. Components render markup and styles from props and emit events. They do not fetch or store data.
Keep sensitive data in application logic behind component props and emits. Never pass secrets as props to Vuetify components. Server-side pagination, sorting and filtering for VDataTable still require app-level fetch logic and error handling.
Theme values are exposed as CSS variables. Global styles can override them via specificity. Enforce style isolation if the app mixes design systems.
Operational checks
Verify single install. Inspect app entry to confirm createVuetify is called once and the instance is passed to createApp.use. No duplicate installs per route.
Verify SSR hydration. Render a sample Vuetify component with SSR enabled and check dev console for hydration mismatch warnings. Compare server HTML to initial client render for theme class names.
Verify accessibility defaults. Examine rendered DOM for expected ARIA attributes on interactive components and confirm keyboard focus behavior is active without custom handlers.
Monitor theme consistency. Track CSS variable values across builds. A practical check is to render a reference page with Vuetify theme colors and diff screenshots or computed styles in CI.
Failure modes
Hydration mismatch when server and client theme config differ. This occurs if theme object is built from client-only state such as localStorage. Keep theme config static or derived from request headers on server.
CSS specificity conflicts with existing styles causing visual regressions in production. Vuetify relies on CSS variables; global resets can override them.
Data handling confusion. Expecting Vuetify to manage data fetching leads to unhandled loading and error states. VDataTable requires explicit items, loading and error props from app logic.
When to change the design
Move beyond Material Design to a fully custom design token system that Vuetify cannot express via theme overrides. At that point a headless UI library or custom components reduce design drift.
Multiple independent theming domains per micro-frontend. A single root plugin cannot isolate themes safely across independently deployed apps. Consider scoped Vuetify instances or separate apps.
Requirement for non-Vue rendering targets. Vuetify is Vue-specific.
Limitation: Vuetify customization is bounded by Material Design. Deep visual changes increase override cost and risk of breaking accessibility defaults.
