How to switch KDE neon editions
If you want to move from the stable User edition to the Testing preview or the Unstable Git builds, change the APT repository pointer in /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kde-neon.list and run a full upgrade. This single file controls which edition’s packages are pulled from the KDE neon archive.
Worked configuration example
- Open the sources file with root privileges:
- Replace the base URL line. For example, to switch to Testing, change:
- Save and exit the editor.
- Update the package list and perform a full upgrade:
- After the upgrade finishes, reboot or restart Plasma to start using the new edition.
sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/kde-neon.list
deb http://archive.kde.org/neon/user /
to
deb http://archive.kde.org/neon/testing /
sudo apt update
sudo apt full-upgrade
Limits and precautions
- The Testing and Unstable editions receive frequent updates that can introduce breaking changes; they are not recommended for production workloads.
- Downgrading from Testing or Unstable back to User is not a simple downgrade; you usually need to reinstall the
kde-neon-metapackage or perform a fresh install to guarantee a clean state. - Mixing repository lines (e.g., keeping both user and testing entries) creates dependency conflicts and should be avoided.
- Third‑party PPAs that provide Plasma or Qt packages can interfere with neon’s repositories; disable or remove them before switching.
- If the package cache is not cleared, old versions may linger, causing version mismatches after the switch.
How to verify the switch
- Check the meta‑package version:
- Confirm the Plasma shell version matches the target edition (e.g., Testing should show a pre‑release version):
- Review the upgrade log for errors:
- Ensure no packages are held back:
apt show kde-neon-meta | grep Version
plasmashell --version
grep -i error /var/log/apt/term.log
sudo apt-mark showhold
Following these steps lets you move between editions safely, but always back up important data and consider using a test machine for Testing or Unstable.
