Standardize PHP Code with PhpStorm Live Templates Across a Team
Create a version-controlled set of PhpStorm Live Templates for team PHP boilerplate, scope them to the PHP language context, export as XML, and verify expansion in test files.

Problem: repeated PHP boilerplate drifts across a codebase
Teams waste time re-typing the same docblocks, try-catch scaffolding, or constructor property promotions. Manual copy-paste creates inconsistencies in parameter names, return types, and formatting. A shared Live Template set gives one source of truth for snippet expansion that is language-aware and triggerable with Tab.
Desired outcome
Version-controlled PHP Live Templates that expand reliably in *.php files, prompt for variable values in order, and can be imported by any team member without manual recreation.
Prerequisites
- PhpStorm installed with access to File Settings Editor Live Templates; changes are per-user, no elevated permissions needed.
- Agreement on abbreviation names to avoid collisions with existing IDE shortcuts.
- A shared location for the exported template file, e.g., repo /tools/phpstorm/templates/. The export is an XML file.
Create and scope a template
Open Settings Editor Live Templates. The left pane lists template groups; the right pane shows abbreviation, description, and template text for the selected group.
- Create a new group for the team, e.g., Team PHP. This keeps custom templates separate from built-in groups.
- Inside the group, click + Live Template. Set Abbreviation to a short trigger, for example phpdoc.
- Define the template body. Example for a method docblock with variables:
/ * $DESCRIPTION$ * @param $PARAM_TYPE$ $PARAM_NAME$ * @return $RETURN_TYPE$ */Click Edit variables to define $DESCRIPTION$, $PARAM_TYPE$, $PARAM_NAME$, $RETURN_TYPE$. Set default values where appropriate and define the tab-stop order. Expression fields can use predefined functions for dynamic defaults.
Set the context. Click Define and check PHP under Languages. Restricting context prevents expansion in unintended file types such as Blade or plain text, which would cause syntax errors or unexpected insertion.
Export and distribute
In the Live Templates manager, select the Team PHP group and click Export. Save the XML file to the shared location. Team members import via Import in the same manager; import replaces templates with the same name and abbreviation without modifying project files.
Expected checks
- Open Settings Editor Live Templates and confirm the abbreviation appears under the relevant language or file context column.
- Create a test file of the target type, e.g., test.php, and type the abbreviation followed by Tab. Verify the template expands to the expected code structure with variable placeholders active and focus moves through variables in the defined order.
- Open a non-PHP file, e.g., README.md, type the same abbreviation and confirm it does not expand. This validates context scoping.
Limitations and recovery
Incorrect context selection may cause Live Templates to expand in unintended file types leading to syntax errors or unexpected code insertion. Review the Define context checkboxes before sharing.
Major PhpStorm version upgrades can alter Live Template schema requiring manual adjustment of exported template files to maintain functionality. Keep the exported XML under version control so changes are reviewable.
Recovery options: remove a problematic template from the group, or re-import a previous exported XML from the shared location. Because templates are settings, not project files, rollback is done in Settings Editor Live Templates without affecting code.
