Solving UI Overlap and Z-Index Issues with Android Studio Layout Inspector
Stop guessing why your UI elements are unclickable. Learn how to use Android Studio's Layout Inspector and 3D mode to identify overlapping views and z-index conflicts in real-time.

The "Invisible View" Problem
You've spent an hour adjusting margins and padding in your XML or Compose code, but a button remains unclickable or a text field is partially obscured. In complex layouts—especially those using ConstraintLayout or overlapping Compose elements—the issue is rarely a missing attribute. Instead, it is usually a z-index conflict where an invisible container or a transparent overlay is capturing touch events or blocking the view from the top of the stack.
The fastest way to resolve this is to stop guessing coordinates and use the Layout Inspector. This tool allows you to visualize the UI hierarchy in real-time, mapping the rendered pixels back to the actual source code without adding debug logs or temporary background colors to your views.
Mapping the Component Tree
The Layout Inspector provides a dual-pane view: the visual representation of your app and the Component Tree. The Component Tree is a hierarchical list of every active view on the screen. When you select an element in the tree, Android Studio highlights the corresponding area on the device and opens the Attributes panel.
This is critical for identifying "ghost" views—containers that have match_parent dimensions but no visible content, which often intercept clicks intended for elements beneath them. By selecting the view in the tree, you can immediately see its exact boundaries, visibility status, and padding values.
Visualizing Depth with 3D Mode
Standard 2D inspection can't always show you which view is "on top." Android Studio includes a 3D visualization mode that rotates the UI hierarchy along the Z-axis. This transforms your flat screen into a stacked series of layers.
In 3D mode, you can physically see if a FrameLayout or a Compose Box is hovering over your interactive elements. If a view appears as a thin sheet floating above your button, you have found your z-index culprit. You can then adjust the elevation (for Views) or the declaration order (for Compose) to fix the stacking.
Practical Example: Debugging a Non-Responsive Button
Imagine a scenario where a "Submit" button is visible but does not trigger an onClick event. To diagnose this using the Layout Inspector:
- Run the app on an emulator or physical device (API 29+ recommended for full live-update support).
- Navigate to Tools > Layout Inspector.
- Select the running process from the dropdown menu.
- Click the button in the visual preview. If the Component Tree selects a different element (e.g., a
ConstraintLayoutor a transparentView), that element is overlapping your button. - Switch to 3D Mode to see the distance between the overlapping view and the button.
Required Permissions: No special app permissions are needed, but the device must have USB Debugging enabled in Developer Options. The Layout Inspector runs as a separate process communicating via the ADB (Android Debug Bridge) protocol.
Limitations and Performance Trade-offs
While powerful, the Layout Inspector is not without costs. Because it captures the entire view hierarchy and streams it to the IDE, you may notice a performance dip on lower-end physical devices. This overhead can lead to "jank" (stuttering) during animations while the inspector is active.
Additionally, highly customized views—such as those overriding onDraw with complex Canvas operations—may not always render with 100% accuracy in the 3D visualization. Always verify the final fix by disabling the inspector and testing the interaction on the device.
Verifying the Fix
To ensure the UI overlap is resolved, perform a final check in the Component Tree. Select the target interactive element and verify that no other view in the hierarchy shares the same screen coordinates while possessing a higher Z-index or elevation. Once the Component Tree shows the target element as the topmost leaf for that specific coordinate, the interaction issue should be resolved.
