Problem: Knit fails with pandoc not found or conversion error 127
Clicking Knit in RStudio opens an error pane with messages like "pandoc document conversion failed with error 127" or "pandoc not found". The document does not render and the R Markdown render log stops at the pandoc invocation. The useful takeaway is that RStudio needs a reachable pandoc executable of sufficient version, and it will prefer a custom path or RSTUDIO_PANDOC over its bundled copy. Fix the path and version first, not the R code.
Recognizable condition
- Knit fails immediately, before any R chunks run.
- Error pane mentions pandoc, error 127, or "command not found".
- HTML output may fail even for a minimal document with
output: html_document. - PDF output fails with pandoc errors even when a LaTeX distribution is present.
Cause and diagnostic table
| Symptom | Likely cause | Quick check |
|---|---|---|
| "pandoc not found" / error 127 | Pandoc not installed or not on system PATH | pandoc --version in system terminal |
| Version too old for output format | Pandoc < minimum required by R Markdown format, e.g. PDF often needs >=2.0 | Version string from pandoc --version vs format docs |
| Knit works on one machine, not another | RStudio configured to use custom pandoc path that is wrong | Tools → Global Options → Sweave → Pandoc |
| RStudio ignores system pandoc | Environment variable RSTUDIO_PANDOC points elsewhere | Sys.getenv("RSTUDIO_PANDOC") in R console |
| Bundled pandoc missing | RStudio install corrupted or resources folder moved | Check RStudio resources folder for pandoc binary |
Ordered checks
1. Reproduce with a minimal document
Create a new R Markdown file with only:
---
title: Test
output: html_document
---
Test
Run Knit. If this fails, the problem is pandoc/environment, not your document.
2. Verify system pandoc
Run in a system terminal, not the RStudio terminal, to test PATH as RStudio sees it.
pandoc --version
Required permissions: none for check, administrator for install. Expected check: a version line is returned. If command not found, pandoc is not installed or not on PATH.
3. Check RStudio pandoc settings
In RStudio: Tools → Global Options → Sweave → Pandoc. Note the path shown. Empty means use bundled.
In R console:
Sys.getenv("RSTUDIO_PANDOC")
If it returns a path, RStudio will use that executable instead of bundled. Verify the file exists.
4. Verify bundled pandoc
RStudio ships a bundled pandoc in its resources folder. On Windows it is typically under RStudio\bin\pandoc\. On macOS /Applications/RStudio.app/Contents/Resources/app/quarto/bin/tools/ or similar. Presence of the binary indicates RStudio can fall back if custom path is cleared.
Fixes tied to findings
Pandoc missing or not on PATH
Install pandoc from pandoc.org and ensure the install directory is on system PATH. Restart RStudio after install. Risk: system-wide install requires admin rights.
Version too old
Update pandoc to a version meeting the minimum for your output format. Caution: updating pandoc may break compatibility with older R Markdown templates that rely on specific pandoc behavior. Test existing documents after upgrade.
Incorrect custom path
If Tools → Global Options → Sweave → Pandoc points to a wrong file, clear the field to use bundled, or correct the path. Alternatively unset RSTUDIO_PANDOC in your shell profile or system environment variables and restart RStudio. Caution: modifying RSTUDIO_PANDOC can override RStudio's internal pandoc and lead to unexpected errors if the pointed version is mismatched.
Bundled pandoc missing
Reinstall RStudio to restore the bundled pandoc. This is a state-changing operation; back up settings first.
PDF output still fails
PDF requires a LaTeX distribution in addition to pandoc. Install a LaTeX distribution and verify xelatex --version works in terminal.
Verify the fix
- Run
pandoc --versionin a terminal and confirm a version string is returned. - In R console,
Sys.getenv("RSTUDIO_PANDOC")should be empty or point to an existing executable. - Knit the minimal test document. Success indicates pandoc resolution is correct.
Limitation: fixing pandoc does not fix R chunk errors or missing LaTeX packages. Those produce different error messages.
Escalation criteria
Escalate if knitting succeeds once but fails again after restarting RStudio, or if errors persist despite correct pandoc version and path. Check for permission issues, antivirus quarantine of pandoc binary, or file corruption. File a bug report with RStudio support including RStudio version, pandoc version from pandoc --version, OS details, and the exact error pane text.
