Resolving 'Guest Agent not running' in Proxmox VE
Fix the 'Guest Agent not running' error in Proxmox VE by aligning VM hardware options with guest OS drivers. Learn how to diagnose and resolve communication gaps for Linux and Windows guests.

The Communication Gap
When the Proxmox VE web interface displays Guest Agent not running, the host has lost its management channel to the virtual machine. This prevents the host from performing graceful shutdowns, freezing the filesystem for backups, or reporting the guest's internal IP addresses.
The problem is almost always a mismatch between the virtual hardware provided by the hypervisor and the software installed inside the guest OS. Because the agent communicates via a virtio-serial port (a virtual hardware device) rather than a network socket, standard network firewall rules are rarely the cause.
Diagnostic Matrix
| Symptom | Likely Cause | Primary Check |
|---|---|---|
| Status persists after guest OS install | Missing VirtIO hardware flag | VM Options > QEMU Guest Agent |
| Hardware enabled, but status 'not running' | Missing guest package/driver | Package manager or services.msc |
| Agent installed, but status 'not running' | Service crashed or stopped | systemctl status / Services |
| Status 'not running' after VM reboot | Hardware change not applied | Check for 'Pending changes' in UI |
Step 1: Verify Hypervisor Hardware Configuration
The guest OS cannot communicate with the host if the virtual serial port does not exist. This must be enabled in the Proxmox configuration before the software can function.
- Navigate to the VM > Options tab in the Proxmox Web UI.
- Locate QEMU Guest Agent. If it is set to
Disabled, double-click it and check theUse QEMU Guest Agentbox. - Critical: A standard guest reboot is insufficient to apply this change. You must perform a full Shutdown and then Start the VM from the Proxmox interface to initialize the new virtual hardware.
Step 2: Install and Activate Guest Software
Once the hardware port is available, the guest OS must have the agent software installed to listen on that port.
For Linux Guests (Debian/Ubuntu/CentOS)
Run the following commands as root or via sudo on the guest terminal:
# Install the agent
apt-get update && apt-get install qemu-guest-agent -y # Debian/Ubuntu
yum install qemu-guest-agent -y # CentOS/RHEL
# Enable and start the service
systemctl enable qemu-guest-agent
systemctl start qemu-guest-agent
For Windows Guests
Windows requires the VirtIO drivers to recognize the serial device.
- Mount the
virtio-win.isoto the VM's CD/DVD drive. - Open the drive in Windows Explorer and run the
virtio-win-guest-tools.exeinstaller. This installs both the necessary drivers and the QEMU Guest Agent service. - Open
services.mscand verify that the QEMU Guest Agent service is listed asRunning.
Step 3: Direct Communication Test
If the UI still shows the agent as not running, bypass the web interface to determine if the issue is the agent itself or a UI refresh lag. Run this command from the Proxmox Host shell (requires root permissions):
# Replace [VMID] with your actual VM ID (e.g., 101)
qm guest cmd [VMID]
Expected Result: A JSON response containing guest system information. If the command returns an error such as QEMU guest agent is not running, the issue remains within the guest OS or the hardware configuration.
Limitations and Risks
- Backup Impact: Without a running agent, Proxmox cannot trigger a
fs-freeze. This means backups are performed in a "crash-consistent" state rather than a "file-system-consistent" state, which can increase the risk of database corruption upon restoration. - Resource Overhead: The agent is extremely lightweight; however, in highly constrained environments (VMs with <512MB RAM), ensure the service is not being killed by the OOM (Out of Memory) killer.
Rollback Procedure
If the agent causes instability (rare), revert the changes as follows:
- Uninstall the
qemu-guest-agentpackage from the guest OS. - Disable the QEMU Guest Agent option in the VM Options tab.
- Perform a full Shutdown and Start cycle.
