Mocha Async/Await: Simplifying Async Test Code
Mocha's built-in async/await support removes boilerplate from async tests, with a concrete fetch example, version checks, and trade-offs to avoid race conditions.

The Problem with Callback-Heavy Mocha Tests
Before Mocha 6, async tests required either nested callbacks or promise chains. Both patterns add visual noise and make error propagation harder to track.
Mocha Native Async/Await Support
Since Mocha 6, any test function returning a Promise or declared async is automatically awaited. The runner pauses until the promise resolves or rejects, and marks the test as failed on rejection. This eliminates the need for done() callbacks or explicit return statements.
A Concrete Example Fetching JSON
This test fetches a resource using node-fetch and validates the response. No done or manual promise handling is required.
it('returns a 200 status', async () => { const res = await fetch('https://jsonplaceholder.typicode.com/todos/1'); expect(res.status).to.equal(200); const data = await res.json(); expect(data).to.have.property('id', 1); })Verification Checklist
- Confirm Node version: code node -v should be >= 14.
- Confirm Mocha version: code npx mocha --version should be >= 6.
- Run the test: code npx mocha test-fetch.js and look for a passing result.
- Ensure no UnhandledPromiseRejectionWarning appears in the console.
Trade-off When Async/Await Can Mislead
Forgetting to await an async operation can cause silent failures. Mocha may report the test as passing if the promise never rejects but the test body throws at runtime leading to flaky behavior. Always place await directly on the async call.
Parallel Test Execution Mocha 10 plus
Running tests in parallel can expose shared-state issues. If multiple async tests modify a global variable they can interfere. Use beforeEach afterEach to reset state or group dependent tests in a single describe block and run them sequentially with serial.
Actionable Closing
Adopting async await in Mocha yields cleaner code and less boilerplate. Check your Node and Mocha versions handle rejections explicitly and isolate state when running in parallel. Run npx mocha --exit in CI to ensure the event loop closes after tests.
