The Problem: Losing Context in Large Files
When editing files exceeding a few hundred lines, standard navigation (scrolling or searching) often leads to context loss. You jump between a function definition and its call site, only to lose your original place. While buffers and windows help, they do not solve the need for precise, named anchors within a single file or across a project.
The solution is Vim Marks. Marks act as named bookmarks that let you jump to a specific line and column instantly, regardless of where you are in the buffer or which file is currently active.

Implementing Local and Global Marks
Vim distinguishes between marks based on the case of the letter used. This distinction determines whether the mark is tied to a specific file or the entire Vim session.
Local Marks (a-z)
Local marks are buffer-specific. If you set mark a in main.c and then set mark a in utils.c, they remain independent.
- Set a mark: In Normal mode, press
mfollowed by a lowercase letter (e.g.,ma). The cursor position is now anchored toa. - Jump to exact position: Press
`a(backtick + a). This moves the cursor to the exact line and column of the mark. - Jump to start of line: Press
'a(single quote + a). This moves the cursor to the first non-blank character of the line containing the mark.
Global Marks (A-Z)
Global marks are session-wide. They allow you to jump to a specific file and line from anywhere in your editor.
- Set a global mark: In Normal mode, press
mfollowed by an uppercase letter (e.g.,mG). - Jump across buffers: Regardless of which file is currently open, pressing
`Gwill automatically open the file whereGwas set and place the cursor at the exact coordinates.

Imagine you are debugging a variable in app.py (line 450) but need to check its initialization in config.py (line 12).

config.pyand find the initialization. PressmBto set a global mark for the base config. - Return to
app.pyby pressing`a. - Whenever you need to verify the config again, press
`B.
Limitations and Risks
- Overwriting: Setting a mark on a letter already in use (e.g., pressing
matwice in different locations) silently overwrites the previous mark. - Memory and intent: While marks use negligible memory, relying on them for long-term project documentation is discouraged; use actual comments or a task runner for permanent markers.
- Case sensitivity: Using
'aversus'Atriggers entirely different behaviors (local versus global).
Cleanup
If you have set a mark accidentally or wish to clear it to avoid confusion, use the delmarks command from Normal mode:
:delmarks a " delete local mark a
:delmarks A " delete global mark A
:delmarks a-z " delete all local marksAfter cleanup, run :marks again to confirm the marks were removed.
