Solving the "Blind Spot" in User Analytics
Quantitative tools like Google Analytics tell you that users are dropping off a checkout page, but they don't tell you why. You might have a broken CSS element overlapping a button or a confusing form layout that triggers frustration. Microsoft Clarity solves this by capturing DOM mutations—changes to the HTML structure of your page—and user interactions to create visual session recordings and heatmaps.
The primary goal of this implementation is to gain qualitative visibility into user friction while maintaining strict data privacy through PII (Personally Identifiable Information) masking.
Prerequisites
- Administrative access to the web application's HTML source or a Tag Manager (e.g., Google Tag Manager).
- A Microsoft Clarity project ID (generated upon project creation in the Clarity dashboard).
- Knowledge of your site's Content Security Policy (CSP) if one is implemented.
Deployment Procedure
Clarity operates via a lightweight JavaScript snippet. It does not require server-side installation, as it captures the client-side state of the browser.
1. Injecting the Tracking Code
Insert the provided tracking code immediately before the closing </head> tag of your application. If using a Single Page Application (SPA), ensure the script is loaded in the main index.html to track transitions across virtual routes.
<script type="text/javascript">
(function(c,l,a,r,i,t,y){
c[a]=c[a]||function(){(c[a].q=c[a].q||[]).push(arguments)};
t=l.createElement(r);t.async=1;t.src="https://www.clarity.ms/tag";
y=l.getElementsByTagName(r)[0];y.parentNode.insertBefore(t,y);
})(window, document, "clarity", "script", "YOUR_PROJECT_ID");
</script>Risk: If you have a strict Content Security Policy (CSP), the browser will block the script. You must whitelist the Clarity domains in your Content-Security-Policy header:
script-src: https://www.clarity.msconnect-src: https://*.clarity.ms
2. Configuring Privacy and PII Masking
By default, Clarity masks sensitive input fields. However, custom components or non-standard input fields may still leak PII. You must configure masking levels in the dashboard under Settings > Masking.
| Masking Level | Behavior | Use Case |
|---|---|---|
| Balanced | Masks known sensitive fields; captures others. | Standard e-commerce sites. |
| Strict | Masks all text by default. | Healthcare or Financial apps (GDPR/HIPAA). |
| Custom | Developer defines specific elements to mask. | Complex dashboards with proprietary data. |
To manually mask a specific element in your HTML, add the attribute data-clarity-mask="true" to the tag. This ensures the element is replaced by asterisks in the recording playback regardless of the global setting.
Verification and Diagnostics
Once deployed, use these steps to verify that data is flowing and privacy settings are active.
Network Verification
Open your browser's Developer Tools (F12) and navigate to the Network tab. Refresh the page and filter for clarity.ms. You should see a successful 200 OK response for the clarity.js script and subsequent collect requests as you interact with the page.
Behavioral Trigger Test
To verify that Clarity is correctly identifying "friction," perform a Rage Click: rapidly click a non-interactive element (like a static image or a piece of text) 5–10 times. After a short processing delay, check the Clarity dashboard under the "Friction" filter to see if the session was flagged as a rage click.
Masking Audit
Enter dummy data into your forms and view the recording in the dashboard. Ensure that any field marked for masking appears as asterisks (****) and not as plain text.
Limitations and Performance
- DOM Heavy Pages: Applications with frequent, high-volume DOM updates (e.g., real-time data tickers) may see increased network traffic as Clarity sends mutation data to the server.
- Recording Latency: Session recordings are not instantaneous; there is typically a delay between the user action and the availability of the playback in the dashboard.
Rollback Procedure
To disable Clarity, remove the JavaScript snippet from the </head> section of your HTML or pause the tag in your Tag Manager. This immediately stops the client-side script from executing and sending data.
