Desired outcome
Create a personal copy of a public Glitch project, make code changes, see the updated app live, and know how to fix it if the app fails to start.
Prerequisites
- A free Glitch account (sign up at
https://glitch.com). - Internet access and a web browser.
- The URL of the public project you want to fork (e.g.,
https://glitch.com/~hello-express).
Procedure
- Open the project – Paste the project URL into the browser’s address bar and press Enter.
- Remix to edit – Click the
Remix to Editbutton in the header. Glitch creates a new container and opens the editor. - Edit files – In the file tree, select
index.js(or any file you want to change). Replace the response text, for example:
Save the file with Ctrl+S (or Cmd+S on macOS).app.get('/', (req, res) => { res.send('Hello from my remixed app!'); }); - Preview changes – Click the
Show Livebutton above the editor. A new tab opens with the live preview URL (e.g.,https://your-project-name.glitch.me). - Verify the update – Reload the preview page and confirm the new text appears.
Expected checks
- After each save, the live preview should refresh automatically (or you can manually reload).
- Open the
Logspane (bottom of the editor) and look for startup messages; there should be no red error stack traces. - If your app uses environment variables, ensure they are defined in the
.envfile and that the values appear inprocess.envwhen you inspect the logs.
Recovery options
If the app fails to start after your changes:
- Check the logs – The
Logspane shows the exact error (e.g., missing module, syntax error). Fix the issue in the editor and save. - Revert via Git history – Click the
Showbutton in the top‑right, chooseGit, then select a previous commit and clickRestore this commit. - Reset the project – In the project’s settings (
⚙️ Settings→Advanced Options), clickReset Projectto restore the original starter code. This removes all your edits but returns the app to a working state.
Limitations and practical verification
- Free projects automatically sleep after 5 minutes of inactivity; the next request will experience a short delay while the container wakes up.
- Environment variables stored in
.envare visible to anyone who can view the project source unless the project is made private. - Large asset uploads or excessive file writes may exceed the container’s storage quota and prevent the app from starting.
To confirm your changes are persistent, click the Remix button on your edited project to create a second copy. Open the live preview of the new copy and verify it runs without needing further configuration.
