Problem: Repeatedly copying query results into a spreadsheet
When you need to share the outcome of a SELECT statement with teammates or load it into another tool, manually selecting cells and copying them into Excel is error‑prone and slow, especially if the result set changes frequently.
Thesis: The Data Export Wizard in SQL Developer lets you export query results to a file of your choice, save the settings as a template, and reuse them with a single click.
How the wizard works
After executing a query, the result grid appears in the SQL Worksheet. Right‑click anywhere inside the grid and choose Export. The wizard opens with a preview of the first few rows.
- Select the target format: CSV, XLSX, HTML, XML, JSON, or INSERT statements.
- Choose a destination folder and file name.
- Optionally customize the delimiter, text qualifier, date format, and whether to include a header row or a UTF‑8 BOM.
- Click
Nextto review the summary, thenFinishto start the export.
The wizard streams rows directly to disk, so memory usage stays low even for large result sets.
Worked example: exporting to CSV and saving a template
- Run a query that returns a few dozen rows, for example:
- Right‑click the result grid and select
Export. - In the wizard:
- Format:
CSV - File:
/tmp/employees_dept10.csv - Delimiter: comma (default)
- Text qualifier: double quote (default)
- Header row: checked
- UTF‑8 BOM: unchecked (optional)
- Format:
- Click
Next, verify the summary, then clickFinish. - After the export completes, open the file in a text editor or spreadsheet to confirm the content matches the grid.
- To reuse these settings, click
Save As Templateon the wizard’s first page, give it a name likeDept10 CSV, and store it. - Later, run a different query (e.g., for department 20), right‑click the grid, choose
Export, pickUse Template, selectDept10 CSV, adjust the file path if needed, and finish. The delimiter, qualifier, and header options are pre‑filled.
SELECT employee_id, first_name, last_name, hire_date
FROM employees
WHERE department_id = 10;
Trade‑off and limitation
The wizard does not compress the output automatically. Exporting a table with millions of rows will produce a large CSV or XLSX file and may take noticeable time. If disk space or transfer bandwidth is a concern, you can compress the file manually after the export finishes (e.g., with gzip or zip). Additionally, LOB columns are exported as their textual representation; binary LOBs appear as placeholder text unless you first convert them to a suitable format (e.g., using UTL_RAW.CAST_TO_VARCHAR2).
Actionable closing
Next time you need to share query results, try the Export wizard instead of manual copy‑paste. Save the settings that match your team’s preferred format as a template, and you’ll reduce repetitive steps and avoid formatting mistakes. Verify each export by opening the generated file in a spreadsheet or text editor; if the data looks correct, you’ve successfully used the feature.
