Recognizable condition
When a MonoGame game throws a ContentLoadException (or returns null from Content.Load) for an asset that exists in the source project, the corresponding .xnb file is missing from the output directory.
Cause and diagnostic table
| Possible cause | What to look for |
|---|---|
Content item build action set to None | The file is not processed by the content pipeline. |
| Target platform mismatch (e.g., Windows GL vs DirectX) | Processor outputs assets for a different graphics profile. |
Asset name casing mismatch in Content.Load | The .xnb file exists but with different case. |
Ordered checks
- Verify the build action of the source asset.
- In Visual Studio Solution Explorer, right‑click the asset → Properties.
- Ensure Build Action is set to
Content(notNone).
- Confirm the target platform/profile matches the content processor.
- Open the
Content.mgcbfile. - Check the Platform dropdown (e.g., Windows, Android, iOS) and ensure it matches the project’s target.
- If you changed the graphics profile (Reach/HiDef), note that all content must be rebuilt.
- Open the
- Check the exact case of the asset name used in
Content.Load.- Compare the string passed to
Content.Load<Texture2D>("textures/player")with the actual file name on disk. - On case‑sensitive platforms (Linux, Android, iOS) a mismatch prevents loading.
- Compare the string passed to
- Inspect the build output folder for the expected
.xnbfile.- After building, navigate to
bin\Debug\<framework>\Content(or the publish folder). - Look for
textures/player.xnb(matching the path used inContent.Load).
- After building, navigate to
- Use runtime verification to confirm presence.
- Call
if (!ContentManager.IsContentLoaded("textures/player")) { /* handle missing */ }or attempt a load and catchContentLoadException. - Log the full path being searched:
Content.RootDirectory + \"\" + assetName + \".xnb\".
- Call
Fixes tied to findings
- Build action is None: Change to Content, rebuild the solution, and verify the .xnb appears.
- Platform/profile mismatch: Align the Content.mgcb Platform setting with the project’s target, or change the graphics profile back to the original setting and rebuild all content.
- Casing mismatch: Rename either the source file or the string in
Content.Loadto match exactly (preserving case). Rebuild and test.
Escalation criteria
If the asset still fails to load after performing the checks above:
- Clean the solution (
binandobjfolders) and rebuild. - Examine the Content Pipeline build output for warnings or errors (View → Output → Show output from: MSBuild).
- Temporarily copy a known‑good .xnb file into the output folder to isolate whether the issue is pipeline‑side or load‑side.
- If a custom content processor is involved, verify its
Processmethod returns non‑null output and does not throw. - As a last resort, recreate the asset from source (e.g., re‑export the PNG) and re‑add it to the content project.
