Recognizable condition
When a CSS Grid container does not behave as expected, you may see items overlapping, appearing outside the defined tracks, or the container collapsing to zero height. Unexpected scrollbars can also appear when gaps are missing or track sizes are miscalculated.
Cause/diagnostic table
| Possible cause | What to look for |
|---|---|
Missing or incorrect display: grid (or inline-grid) on the container | Computed style shows display: block or another value |
Undefined or invalid grid-template-columns/grid-template-rows (e.g., zero fr, missing values) | Track list is empty, none, or sums to zero |
| Gap properties set to zero or omitted | Computed gap, row-gap, column-gap are 0px |
| Item placement exceeds explicit tracks without implicit grid intent | Items have grid-column or grid-row values beyond the defined track count |
Conflicting layout rules such as position: absolute or float on grid items | Item’s computed style shows positioning that removes it from grid flow |
Ordered checks
- Open DevTools, select the grid container, and verify that the
displayproperty isgridorinline-gridin the Computed pane. - Inspect
grid-template-columnsandgrid-template-rows. Ensure they are defined (notnone) and that the track list uses valid units (e.g.,fr,px,%) and is not inadvertently zero. - Check
gap,row-gap,column-gapfor a non‑zero value. If they are missing, the browser treats them as zero. - Select a few grid items and look at their
grid-columnandgrid-rowvalues. Confirm they fall within the explicit track range unless you intentionally rely on the implicit grid. - Review the items’ computed styles for any overriding
position,float, ordisplayvalues that could remove them from the grid flow.
Fixes tied to findings
- If the container lacks
display: grid, add it:.grid-container { display: grid; } - If track definitions are missing or zero, define explicit tracks, e.g.:
.grid-container { grid-template-columns: repeat(3, 1fr); grid-template-rows: auto; } - If gaps are missing, set a sensible value:
.grid-container { gap: 1rem; } - If items exceed explicit tracks and you do not want implicit placement, either extend the explicit track list or adjust the item’s placement values to stay within bounds.
- If conflicting
positionorfloatrules are present, remove or override them:.grid-item { position: static; float: none; }
Escalation criteria
- After applying the above fixes, if items still overlap or overflow, consider simplifying the layout: fall back to Flexbox for simpler alignment cases.
- Use a feature query to serve Grid only where supported:
@supports (display: grid) { /* grid rules */ } - For legacy browsers that lack Grid, load a polyfill or provide a fallback stylesheet via
@supports not (display: grid) { /* fallback */ } - Reassess design complexity: excessive nesting, hundreds of tracks, or reliance on experimental subgrid may warrant a redesign or flattening of the grid structure.
Example: correcting a missing gap
Suppose a container is defined as follows:
.cards { display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(4, 1fr); }
The items appear flush against each other because no gap is set. Adding gap: 1rem; resolves the issue:
.cards { display: grid; grid-template-columns: repeat(4, 1fr); gap: 1rem; }
After the change, DevTools grid overlay will show consistent spacing between column lines.
