Convert a Raster Logo to Editable Vector Paths in Illustrator
Turn a raster logo into scalable vector paths using Illustrator's Image Trace. Start with a 300+ PPI PNG, tune Threshold/Paths/Corners/Noise, expand, ungroup, clean up, and verify at 500% scale. Keep the placed raster layer as a fallback — expanding is destructive.

Problem and Takeaway
A raster logo (PNG, JPEG, TIFF) pixelates when scaled. Image Trace in Illustrator 2020+ converts it to editable vector paths that stay crisp at any size. The key is starting with a high-contrast, 300+ PPI source and tuning the trace sliders before expanding — expanding is destructive, so keep the placed raster layer as a fallback.
Prerequisites
- Illustrator 2020 or later (CC 2020, 2021, 2022, 2023, 2024).
- Raster logo file: PNG with transparency preferred, or JPEG/TIFF on solid background. Minimum 300 PPI at final print size.
- Basic comfort with Selection Tool (V) and Direct Selection Tool (A).
- Document color mode set to CMYK for print or RGB for web (File > Document Color Mode).
Procedure
1. Place and Prepare the Image
- Create a new document (File > New) at your target dimensions.
- Choose File > Place, select the raster file, uncheck Link (embed), click Place. Click on the artboard to drop at 100%.
- With the image selected, open the Image Trace panel: Window > Image Trace.
2. Choose a Preset and Adjust Settings
For logos, start with Black & White Logo preset. Enable Preview to see live results.
Adjust these sliders while watching the preview at 100% zoom (View > 100%):
- Threshold (0–255): Higher includes more mid-tones as black. Typical range 128–180 for clean line art.
- Paths (0–100%): Lower = fewer anchor points, smoother curves. Start at 50%.
- Corners (0–100%): Higher preserves sharp corners. Logos often need 75–100%.
- Noise (1–100 px): Ignores details smaller than this value. Increase to 10–20 px to remove dust/speckles.
Concrete example: A 1200×1200 px PNG logo on transparent background. Settings: Threshold 160, Paths 45%, Corners 90%, Noise 15 px. Preview shows clean edges without jagged stair-stepping.
3. Trace and Expand
- Click Trace in the Image Trace panel (or press Enter). The object becomes a tracing object — still linked to the source.
- With the tracing object selected, click Expand in the Control panel (top) or choose Object > Image Trace > Expand. This converts to editable vector paths and embeds the result.
- Immediately choose Object > Ungroup (Shift+Ctrl+G / Shift+Cmd+G). Repeat until individual shapes are selectable with the Direct Selection Tool.
4. Clean Up
- Delete the background shape (usually a large rectangle) if the source had a solid background.
- Select all logo shapes, then Object > Path > Simplify. Set Curve Precision to 98–100%, Angle Threshold 0–5°. Preview on. Click OK. This reduces excess anchor points without losing detail.
- Use the Direct Selection Tool to remove stray points: click a point, press Delete if it’s not needed for shape integrity.
Expected Checks
- Closed paths: In Outline mode (View > Outline, Ctrl+Y / Cmd+Y), verify no open paths. Endpoints should meet.
- Color mode: File > Document Color Mode matches output intent (CMYK for print, RGB for web).
- No stray points: Window > Document Info, panel menu > Objects. Check “Stray Points” reads 0.
- Scale test: Select all, scale to 500% (Object > Transform > Scale, 500%). Edges must remain sharp, no pixelation.
- File size: Save as .ai. For a simple logo, vector file should be smaller than the original raster.
Recovery Options
- Poor trace result: Undo (Ctrl+Z / Cmd+Z) back to the tracing object (before Expand). Adjust sliders in Image Trace panel, re-trace.
- Messy expanded vectors: Delete the expanded group. The original placed raster image is still on the artboard (or hidden in Layers). Select it and re-trace with a different preset (e.g., High Fidelity Photo for reference only, not production).
- Lost original: File > Revert returns to last saved .ai state. Save incrementally (logo_v1.ai, logo_v2.ai) before expanding.
Limitations
- Low-resolution or blurry sources produce noisy traces with thousands of anchor points — not fixable by sliders.
- Gradients, shadows, or photographic detail do not trace cleanly to solid shapes. Use High Fidelity Photo only for visual reference, then redraw manually.
- Expanding is destructive: the live tracing object is gone. Always keep the placed raster layer (hide it in Layers panel) until you’re satisfied.
- Over-simplification (Simplify > 95% Curve Precision) can flatten subtle curves. Preview at 100% zoom before committing.
Verification Checklist
- Open the final .ai in Illustrator. Layers panel shows only vector paths, no embedded raster thumbnails.
- Scale artwork to 1000% (Object > Transform > Scale, 1000%). Edges stay crisp.
- Window > Document Info > Objects: “Raster Images” = 0.
- Export as SVG (File > Export > Export As > SVG). Open in a browser — no pixelation, clean markup.
- Compare file sizes: vector .ai should be smaller than source raster for logos under ~50 shapes.
